About the Fox and Hounds
Pony Club
The Fox and Hounds Pony Club strives to help each member become
a well-rounded horseperson capable of riding safely and tactfully
on the flat, over fences, and in the open. Knowledgeable care of
horses and ponies, horse management, is basic to the well-rounded
horseperson. Fun and friendship are a big part of Pony Club. Our
members develop teamwork and sportsmanship through fair and friendly
competitions. Please see our standing
rules for detailed information about the Clubs operations.
The Fox and Hounds Pony Club meets at the Gloucester
County Library located on Route 45 in Mullica Hill on the second
Wednesday of each month.
History of the Pony Club
The Pony Club started in Great Britain in 1928 with 700 members.
The United States joined the program in 1954. By 1992 there were
more than 130,000 members in 31 countries, making it the largest
equestrian group in the world.
Today, the United States Pony Clubs have more than
12,000 members and more than 600 clubs throughout the United States.
The USPC founders were enthusiastic foxhunters who recognized the
need for an organization to provide sound instruction for all interested
children, especially those who otherwise could not afford expensive
lessons.
Each individual Pony Club is run by a volunteer District
Commissioner and other locally elected officials, but clubs involve
entire families. Pony Club is a monument to volunteerism, with some
3,000 dedicated and often passionate volunteers nationally.
